Counselling sessions take approximately an hour per session. Usually around 6 sessions is enough for a client to feel they have developed their skills to no longer need counselling. However this is entirely up to the client if they feel they can end it earlier or would like to continue then this is what will happen. Counselling is a very personalized service where the client and the counselor develop a collaborative relationship with the goal of helping the client.
The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable, don’t hesitate to ask questions about the therapy process and ask me to repeat anything you don’t understand.
For full disclosure and so you are fully aware there are some things regarding record keeping, confidentiality, what to expect and how sessions will flow I will need to tell you. During sessions conversations are not audio recorded, however I will take notes and write these up at the end of the session. The hand written notes are destroyed through a secure service, the electronic notes are password protected, accessible by me only and stored on a quarantined secure computer (a computer that has no hardware necessary to connect to the internet).
Everything discussed is kept confidential. However there are exceptions, they include if you need me to speak to any other service provider/person regarding our sessions and/or if there is a mandate for disclosure (court ordered or legally mandated by legislation). These include situations where you are at risk of harm to yourself or others or that you know of harm being done to child or the elderly. In these situations you will be informed at the time and we will/can discuss it, disclosure of your session conversations will only occur with your knowledge.
These are conditions of the service and legal mandated responsibilities that I as your counselor and the organization as your service provider must abide by. Most organizations and counselors have similar policies and we are all mandated by law regarding harm to yourself or others.
As long as you are comfortable with this then we can move onto discussing your reasons for being here and where you would like start.
Available via phone, Skype or in person on Saturdays at Inspirition.
